control of rgb

I have a running pipeline (in C++) that I want to manipulate the rgb levels of.  I was thinking of using one of the filters like ffmpegcolorspace and modifying the red_mask, green_mask, and blue_mask.  Am I on the right track here?  Or is there something better suited for that task?
