We do this once per process in order to feed the provider and create
dynamic elements (decoder and converters). There is no way to know it's
not needed without probing first. We do a subset of the full probing,
so unless you have kernel driver issues, it's all very fast.

Why do you think a kernel bug is unlikely on 3.10 ?
