How can I understand what caps to use for incoming stream?

Hi,
is there a way to understand what kind of caps my incoming stream has?
I have a client-server application and I have to add a branch for each
incoming stream, but I don't know what kind of caps my incoming stream has.
On depending of caps I have to add a branch with appropriate depay-decode
elements. Is it possible?
