we found out the reason. One of our apps cleans-up gstreamer commands periodically. No worries. Thanks, anyway.

So when the rtsp PLAY command is issued a keep alive interval is in the response. Something must be sent back before that times out like a rtcp receiver report on the rtcp channel or a Get_Parameters on the session.
