Yeah, if you want to support several versions of the same codebase
sometimes you have to do that. I'd be surprised if it's a lot of effort
to add #ifdef's for this; in how many places to you use these strings?

I'm not so sure that all testing would be obsoleted; the main change
we're talking about is a few changes to how actions are declared and
what their names are. The rest of the changes from PK 0.4 to HEAD are
mainly docs being rearranged / improved, some changes to how updates are
made and some stability fixes.
