strange problem with hal and kde 3.5

Hi,

Ok, honestly I don't really have an idea, in particular since it seems that it 
used to work.

Are you sure you didn't update something in the mean time?

You could take a look at lshal or hal-device-manager and see if the inserted 
CD is correctly reported there. Next you could type "dcop kded mediamanager 
fullList" in a terminal of your session and see if the CD is also reported 
there.

And as davidz already suggested maybe you should try to upgrade to the latest 
and greatest, in particular since the hal you're using is 0.4.x and I guess 
almost noone on this list still uses it. I really doubt that Gentoo doesn't 
have something more up to date...
