I think:
 - camera capability should be set on _every_ camera, including those 
   that are PTP and those that are Mass Storage ones.
   So having the same usb id for the two modes is not a problem here.
 - Those that are Mass Storage ones (or more exactly, in that mode),
   should have the camera.access_method=storage prop (and only those).
   This does NOT depend the usb id, because it only depends on the
   "usb interface" property.
   So having the same usb id for the two modes is not a problem here.
 - Everything beyond this, is not a hal issue, but a 
   gvm/gphoto/gthumb/etc issue.
 - gvm should be patched to treat cameras with 
   camera.access_method=storage differently. (I've already patched 
   mine.)
 - gphoto/gthumb should have an import for mass storage mode cameras.


Do we agree? :)
