virtual devices

can you give me any hints how a virtual device like cdemu.sf.net should
behave to be seen by hal? for example what bus should it claim to be
connected to etc. i'm not a developer of cdemu myself, but would like to
have it working with gnome-volume-manager. so i'm collecting as much
information as possible about what has to be done. any help is greatly
appreciated.
