Thanks, I think this has cleared it up.

Just out of idle curiosity, and without wishing to start a punchup^W
argument, what would you consider is the corrct way?

There is an ulterior motive for this. I'm considering writing a "digital
darkroom" application to keep track of photo libraries, manage print
runs and so on. Initially it's for my own use but I hope to release it
under GPL, and so I'd like it to be as portable as possible.
