Yes. For storage devices, transition to EFI/GPT helps a bit, as it 
stores an on-device GUID for each partition. I think the best strategy 
is to use serial whenever possible for settings caching, but if serial 
is not provided, don't use caching (in OpenSolaris we're doing this for 
printer autoconf
