Interestingly, if I use s2disk (which I hadn't previously tried), my machine
snapshots, halts, and then, on boot, does a full normal boot (instead of
resuming). I re-ran 'update-initramfs -u' and 'lilo' and tried again, just to
be sure, but that didn't help. So neither s2ram nor s2disk seem to work.
