That would require the X layer pushing interesting events to the
applications, meaning you'd need to use evdev if you don't want to have
to bind your power button or lid button by hand in an X keymap.

Until evdev is used as a default (I'm sure Daniel and Adam have their
opinions on this), pushing the events through HAL as we do know would be
best.
