the point of this thread was to get it fixed for everyone, not to tell every 
distro out there that they have to start configuring their packages in a 
certain way in order for hal to be happy

pciutils adds zlib/gzip support, hal uses pciutils, so hal should be expanded 
to support pciutils in all its glory
