hal does not detect laptop information with kernel 2.6.21

With 2.6.21 you should better update to 0.5.9 and you should set 
CONFIG_ACPI_SLEEP_PROC_SLEEP to yes for your kernel. The acpi sysfs interface 
is far far away from providing the same info as proc.
