I must inform you of another thing: unfortunately when the ALS is
enabled, the brightness returned by HAL (the one I see in
gnome-power-manager) is wrong, because HAL only returns the brightness
stored in the BIOS. I still didn't find any way to check which is the
current value. Similarly when you change the brightness (using the
gnome-power-manager brightness applet) nothing changes, again because
only the BIOS values are.
So when the ALS is enabled, all brightness control should be disabled,
if possible of course.

About the deprecation of smbios usage in HAL: I'm running ubuntu
jaunty, and the smbios binaries are still there. Will they be
deprecated in a future version of HAL, or is it an ubuntu patch which
still uses those files?
