Adding Smart Card Readers to hal

Hi all,
I'm interested in adding a smart card reader interface to hal and was
looking for some pointers on how to start a new interface.  Initially I
would like to add the following properties:
cardreader.card_inserted, bool, mandatory
cardreader.driver, string, mandatory
cardreader.name, string, mandatory

Probing would be very easy using the opensc library, what is the best way to
use this code for the probing process?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
