I am as sure as I can be about this. I definitely did not add the nomodeset
myself. In fact, when Jani suggested that I try removing the nomodeset, that
was the first time I ever saw the graphical CentOS splash screen on bootup. The
only boot screens I had seen prior to that were text based.

Ideally I would wipe this system out and repeat the installation procedure
again to be extra sure but it's taken me more than 2 weeks to get a machine
that basically works and I don't want to start over at this point. I could try
in a VM environment but my concern is that the virtualization of the hardware
would not be a good comparison to my installation on bare metal.

What I recall is that I selected "Desktop" in the list of available
installation configurations and ever since then the nomodeset was present on
the kernel line.
