I'm trying to remember how I did the initial install (it was a long time ago).
I think I used an application like pendrivelinux to create a bootable USB key
and I'm pretty sure I loaded it with the CentOS minimal ISO because my USB
stick was quite limited in memory. From there, I mounted a separate drive that
had the full ISO for completing the installation.

It could very well be that the nomodeset flag was "inherited" from the initial
minimal boot image generated from pendrivelinux.

I've requested a temporary computer (similar model) from my IT department to
try the procedure out again to confirm where the problem came from.
