I am puzzled as to how an xorg.conf file came to be present in the /etc/X11/
directory.

A standard install of RHEL 6 / CentOS 6 / Scientfic Linux 6 does not install
nor generate such a file, as the version built into the X-server is considered
to be sufficient. The fact that there was one (as attached above -- the file of
68 bytes), which referenced the vesa driver, make me suspicious of the original
installation.

As toracat has previously mentioned, the kernel command line flag "nomodeset"
has never been seen as an installer generated parameter.

Thus there were two abnormallities in this particular EL6 installation:

(1) the "nomodeset" flag on the kernel command line
(2) the generation of an /etc/X11/xorg.conf
