OK I am sorry. It turns out all the weirdness occurs on my attached
BenQ FP747 monitor!

I found the fix was to change
xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --brightness 0.6 #to
xrandr --output VGA1        --brightness 0.6

And now everything is fine.

Then I don't need this in
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/67-jidanni.conf
anymore:

Section "Device"
    Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
    Driver      "intel"
    Option      "AccelMethod"  "uxa"
EndSection

nor do I need to resort to holding back post May 2014 versions of the
package either.

I'm not sure why I used --auto in the first place. But now that it
broke starting May 2014, I'll stay away from it.
