Forgot to say I'm also using KDE (in Fedora 20, but with vanilla kernels) and
that the backlight slider from the battery widget does indeed control the
backlight as before. It's only the keys that don't seem to control it anymore.

And to be a little more precise about xev output I should add that while both
3.16 and 3.17 both register the XF86MonBrightness{Up,Down} presses and releases
only the 3.16 has the RRNotify events there for the screen backlight.
