Automatic is our best-guess to what we should be doing, and yes there are piles
of screens out there which need this. In short this is about which set of users
we're going to piss of by forcing them to manually correct the kernel's choice.
If we'd apply your patches we just get piles more bugs from all the people who
have a washed-out grey soup because their screen really needs automatic mode.

And my experience is that there's a lot more HDMI screens out there which
really need the automatic mode than which break with that mode, so this will be
default.

Thanks anyway for your report and my apologies that this is a lose-lose
situation unfortunately.
