--- Comment #55 from Chris <cpollock at embarqmail.com> ---
I should have posted this info here earlier but wanted to wait to see how it
was going to work out. After getting really frustrated about this I went here -
http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/intel-gfx and joined the
intel-gfx mailing list. The main part of the post I made there on 25 March was:

"I am hoping that by joining this list I can get some kind of assistance
with this bug in the subject line. Every one to one and a half days my
system will just lockup with a black screen and only the mouse cursor
shown. It can be moved but will not go to the desktop. I can CTRL>ALT>F1
to a terminal and login then run sudo reboot and reboot the system. The
complete error shown in my syslog is:

kernel: [93991.808012] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck
timer elapsed... render ring idle

I have filed a bug report at the Ubuntu Launchpad for this -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1402331 and also
have added information to the one opened at freedesktop.org -
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75394

This all started somewhere around kernel version 3.13.0-35 and has
progressed from there. I have noticed a lockup in all of these kernel
versions which I have tested:" (here I listed all the kernels I've tried)

Almost immediately I received a reply referencing the running of the latest
Ubuntu drm/intel kernel which can be found here -
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/ (I'm currently
running the one dated 31 March still). At the suggestion of the list I've also
updated xserver-xorg-video-intel however before you do anything I suggest that
you join the list and ask your question there. Give as much information as
possible. I ran 'sudo lshw' and attached the output to my first post there
about the issue. That I'm sure will help in possibly identifying what the
problem might be.
