I also should note that the script only works while running under MATE, if I
try to run under a modern 3d desktop eg Unity it breaks entirely and I can't
seem to get my system to work properly again until I disconnect the monitor and
reboot. Just disconnecting the monitor leaves X still acting sluggish.
