I've tried the ubuntu kernel ppa mainline, and by using this one

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-nightly/2016-06-21-yakkety/

which I guess it's based on the commit you were mentioning, flickering is gone:
I can change the screen resolution and even after screensaver resume there's no
flickering.

However, when using desktop effects like "show all windows/expose" (both in
unity with compiz and with KDE) there's some flickering...

By the way, while using kernel 4.2 I used to fix the flickering by reverting
the commits mentioned in https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91393#c25
and recompiling the kernel.

This reverting cannot be done on kernel 4.4 though. Thus, the reverted commits
you're mentioning are not the ones mentioned in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91393#c25 ?
