So that was the good news. Unfortunately the reported modes are suspiciously
similar to reduced-blanking CVT modes I've already tried before. Hooking them
up in xrandr results in the same garbled image again - check the attached
photo. 

This is just one example of distortion as interpreted by the panel controller
(unidentified "Mstar" model). Quite often also the monitor runs out of sync and
flickers.
