--- Comment #107 from Chris <cpollock at embarqmail.com> ---
FWIW back in early July this year I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04.1LTS. Since then I
have had no issues at all with any freezes. A few weeks prior to the upgrade
I'd changed over to modesetting however I'm not sure how to check to see if
that is still being used. The current Xserver installed is:

chris at localhost:~$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-intel
xserver-xorg-video-intel:
  Installed: 2:2.99.917+git20160325-1ubuntu1.1
  Candidate: 2:2.99.917+git20160325-1ubuntu1.1
  Version table:
 *** 2:2.99.917+git20160325-1ubuntu1.1 500
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates/main amd64
Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2:2.99.917+git20160325-1ubuntu1 500
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages

And I'm running kernel:

4.4.0-38-generic #57-Ubuntu SMP Tue Sep 6 15:42:33 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux
