Now here's something to try, not for the faint of heart!

1) Grab /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_vbt from the working boot mode (UEFI),
place it under /lib/firmware

2) Grab kernel from drm-tip branch of https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm-tip

3) Apply all patches from https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/series/20016/ on
top

4) Boot in the failing boot mode (legacy), make sure it still fails ;)

5) Add module parameter i915.vbt_firmware=i915_vbt, cross fingers, and boot in
the legacy mode, see what happens

Disclaimer, the last patch hasn't been tested, I don't think it'll eat your
kittens, but no warranties either. ;)
