Whatever the Windows driver does is not applicable to the Linux driver. Among
other things, IIUC they can provide the VBT in .INF files or something like
that too.

Seeing an "i915" driver does not mean that it's the upstream i915 driver. It
may have been backported, forward ported, and in general modified in various
ways.
