Thanks for the check and please ignore the patch that I sent yesterday.
Chris has provided other ideas.

So, based on his idea and looking to the code and history I have
an experiment that I'd like to do.

Could you please revert d55159918176 ("drm/i915: Remove references to
crtc->active from intel_fbdev.c") and let me know if this by itself would solve
the issue for you and paste the dmesg?
