I had a similar pbm. on my HP laptop w/kernel v4.15+ where if the lid was up
(the laptop panel was on, ie. when booting "undocked"/no ext. monitor, the
screen goes black (but backlight still on) just after the machine starts to
boot.

Through trial & error, I SOLVED by turning OFF "fastboot" (was on) for i915 (I
have Intel integrated graphics (ironlake)) in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and 
/etc/default/grub, updated the initramfs & grub.

It seems that fastboot is unable to detect the laptop panel's mode.
