Booting my Dell Inspiron with 'i915.fastboot=1' still results in flicker during
load, and more importantly, completely blank screen afterwards.

Perhaps similar to bug 104838 but in my case the kernel *does not* lock up; I
can still blindly run commands. So here's dmesg output after booting into
emergency mode and running `modprobe i915`:
