Any hints regarding this? I once saw a commit whith this subject:

drm/i915: sdvo: check GPIOA for SDVO DDC (vga DDC) when GPIOE fails

on this list posted by Keith Packard. However, it doesn't seem to be
merged yet. This makes me think that my above issue is a known issue,
which is not handled in the current KMS code yet.
