I will be happy to do it immediately. I will probably need to rebuild
my kernel to be safe as I've been doing so many experiments so let's
try to get it set up the way you want it. I am attaching my config.gz
from the running 2.6.32-gentoo-r2 kernel.

OK, I thought I asked for the i915 driver to be built in built I don't
think the kernel config wants to let me do that. I used make
menuconfig and it only allowed modular so far. I'll check that again
after I send this response.
Here's the way I booted:

The screen went black just after udev said it was starting to process
events so at this point I cannot even log in using the machine's
keyboard and have shelled in from another machine. So to be very clear
- I cannot start X because in this configuration I don't even get a
login promt - or cannot see it if the screen is just painting 'black'.
I believe I can get a login promt if I use the i915.modeset=0 so let
me know if you want me to use that option.
I've attached dmesg, lsmod and lspci info. Let me know what else you
need. I'll go back in and see if I can build the i915 into the kernel
instead of modular and will check for
