I believe what I wrote was correct but I'm happy to tweak it if it
helps others' parsers.

No, I've not.  This is where that helper is both wonderful and crazy
annoying.  We could have a helper to check whether or not a particular
persistence setting is allowed.  Instead (and this is what the old
code does too), it's initialized to false by kzalloc and then we try
to set it to true and ignore the failure.  This ensures that,
regardless of which options are allowed, we'll end up with an allowed
one.  Yeah, the more I type here the more I realize just how bad of an
idea that is. :-)  If you'd like, we can refactor things to have a
validation function persistence_setting_valid() or maybe a pair
requires_persistence() and persistence_allowed().  I'm open to other
suggestions too.
