So I set up Ubuntu 8.10 (32 bit) on an old laptop and I'm able to boot
and get Gnome on both displays using an xorg.conf file whose
"ServerLayout" block is just something like this:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Screen "Default Screen"
    Screen "DisplayLink Screen"
EndSection

I can move the mouse around on the main laptop screen (ie. "Default
Screen" from the "ServerLayout" section) but I can't figure out how to
'get' to the DisplayLink screen (ie. "DisplayLink Screen" from the
"ServerLayout") to interact on it? The screens don't seem connected like
in a dual monitor setup and bringing up "System" > "Preferences" >
"Screen Resolution" from within Gnome only shows the main laptop screen.

After this I tried to turn on Xinerama (as it and TwinView are the only
ways I've done dual screen on Ubuntu in the past) but this just results
in the crashes I was seeing on my other Ubuntu 64 bit machine.

Is there some way to do dual screen without Xinerama? Or, and this shows
my lack of knowledge, how do I 'get' to the other non-laptop screen with
the above mentioned "ServerLayout"? It's almost like what's visible on
the DisplayLink screen is an entirely separate X server.
