It was pointed out to me that I wasn't thinking straight about this --
the mode timings are reflected by hardware in the refresh rate to the
monitor.  So the refresh rate (taken from mode ->
fb_var_screeninfo.pixclock, etc. -> displaylink register settings)
does matter. Sorry.
