To use the monitor you need the udlfb driver in your kernel. Check if it is
enabled, if not you'll have to get it from git.plugable.com and compile it. I've
tried the latest source recently and it compiled for me on 2.6.32-30.

Haven't tried to switch on/off monitors so I can't help you with this part.
