The guys at OpenWRT use now "uqmi" if I'm not mistaken, see:

It's another codebase auto-generated from libqmi's JSON database of
messages. That should already be integrated with netifd/uci, probably,
very likely, much better than what I did with the 'qmi4g' protocol
handler using libqmi.

Hum... I don't think there was any change between 1.6 and 1.8 which
would 'solve' any of that in libqmi/qmicli side.
