Dear all,
I'm trying to get the IT to sort this out:
Open ports:
HTTP, HTTPS
POP3(S), IMAP(S)
VPN, SSH
git, svn, mercurial, bzr
ftp
irc, xmpp
i guess you can drop VPN, mercurial or bzr if one of them is really too scary for them...
but all of them have a use for our projects (except maybe mercurial...)
eventually ftp, too (many people are still using it... but everybody knows nobody should
ah, and we should add SMTP to that list! (i'm adding it... i will remove it if somebody raises a concern).
anyway, the explanation why all those ports are needed:
programmers are coming and they will be working together on their project during the day.
they need to be in touch with their community through email and chatting.
they will be writing code and committing it to their servers.
sorry, instead of dropping protocols, i've added one...
Hi Lara,
To what Ale has written I would add a couple line to stress the absolute need to open those ports for the LGM to take place. It’s vital to the conference. We have developers who are coming from around the world to work together. It’s a yearly conference that has been held in as many universities as cities we have been to and the Internet access was a condition of hosting the conference. All hosting universities have offered their full cooperation with that aspect. It’s crucial.
We also need strong wi-fi access for the participants and access to a sufficient number of power extensions for as many laptops as participants.
Louis
