Hi all,
Ok, added my raking.
I have added a few questions and also added a few answers about the
Montreal bid. This is summarized in this email.
Thanks!
I am not sure I will be available for a meeting during the day next week
but I will definitely try.
I am very happy with all the bids, so I am confident we will only be able
to make a good decision! :-)
Here are my few concerns :
Toronto : I am concerned by the fact that there seem to be no local team
other than ginger and that could become an issue. We need to make sure
she’s going to get the support from at least another person, locally, and
hopefully more than one. While I could handle some stuff remotely being in
the same country, I would not be able to be that person as Toronto is 500
km away from Montreal.
PP : I am concerned by the level of sponsorship we would need to carry over
all the people. Budgetwise this is a big pressure. So, in my view we need
to prepare ahead. 2 years is good but it will still be difficult. Maybe 3
years? I am also concerned by the fact that it’s a long trip and we cannot
make it a 1-week trip for most people who will be travelling anything
between 15 and 30 hours + commute to-fro airport, etc. From LGM "projects"
stand point I think it would be good to make sure we have the go-ahead by
the teams, not only the people. At least, it would be indicative of the
participation.
Montreal : I am concerned by the fact that there was a recent change at the
head of the computer faculty in our host university and we will not be able
meet that person to confirm "officially" anything before a 2-4 weeks
window. I am confident the new person will be glad to help but we need to
meet. I have put more infos on the titanpad.
London : I am concerned by the lateral costs for food and accomodation in
UK’s capital. They say it’s the most expensive city of the (known) universe!
Hope this can help.
As a general concern I think that if we have CoC, we could or should also
have a OTP (Organising Team Protocol) that would state some of the skills
that are needed and what we remotely expect from the local organisers,
including of course being ok with applying the CoC, be available, answer in
a timely manner (and state what we think is timely: within 2-3 days?), have
a local back-up, etc. Only launching the idea.
Just to make it clear (I do believe I have stated that a couple times but
just in case) : I support LGM wherever we decide to go. I will help
remotely if not in Montreal, just like I did in the previous years! I hope
that most bidders share my views!
I *strongly* support that we make a decision for both 2015 and 2016 in the
actual round. If this means taking a couple more weeks to settle some
details, this is perfectly sane in my view. Sometimes it’s urgent to rush,
sometimes it’s urgent not to! ;-)
Cheers!
Louis
