If we think being part of an umbrella org will materially improve our
ability to raise large donations compared to operating as a Canadian
unincorporated org (which is what I understand is currently the case, with
the org helmed by Louis Desjardins, but I'm not 100% sure on this point;
wasn't there also a Swiss association set up by Ale Rimoldi? :) then yes, I
think it is worth making this change.

I don't have any experience with SPI, but based on its reputation over the
years I've been in the scene, I think it is a fine choice.

Those all sound reasonable to me to find out, but I don't expect any
material differences from what has been done in the last few years and what
would be done under SPI.

The document says,

Nate thinks that creating a foundation doesn't solve our root problem
(labor).

I think that joining SPI (or any other umbrella org) does not solve our
secondary problem (labor) or our primary problem (raising capital to pay
that labor.)

On that topic, there are 2 notes in the document:

Louis wrote a long memo that is is worth reading (slowly) down till the end.

Liam says that we could offer memberships at some fee.

Liam reiterates an idea Louis expressed, that I think is a good one. I'm
happy to be a Software Freedom Conservancy member, and a FSF member, and
have been a TUG and UKTUG member; I would be happy to be a LGM member,
especially if it would enable the conference to (a) hire a "finance
manager" to administer the receipt and disbursement of funds and (b) do the
legwork of raising funds.
