Transferring to the list Dave Neary's email and my answer below.
Apparently he was just not able to post to the list for some reason
(got an email telling him he is not subscribed).

I know of La Cantine, but as you say, that's just too small for a LGM.
Unless they changed something because I indeed don't think I went back
there for at least 2 or 3 years. From memory of approximately how big
it is, La Cantine would have been big enough for this years
attendance. But not for the huge audience of Madrid/Leipzig for
instance.

If our organization (LILA) organizes a LGM, I would like to plan for
making it big again as it used to be when I first discovered it (i.e.
the Madrid and Leipzig ones). Not saying we would succeed, but
starting with booking a venue where a few dozen people only can
participate is starting defeated.

Yes it's a nice place which indeed regularly hosts Free
Software-related events, but there are *a lot* of these in Paris. So
no need to restrict oneself. We have a very big Free Software network,
with many associations, probably a dozen hackerspaces, and many
private hosting possibilities. I could think of Mozilla who have
really cool offices which they also lend all the time for FLOSS
events; unfortunately that would be also too small for a big LGM so I
won't bother asking Mozilla either. Though I would definitely organize
a small visit there for interested people because that's really a
must-see (they have this old historical building which is really
incredible: http://www.journaldunet.com/solutions/emploi-rh/siege-de-mozilla-europe-a-paris/).
We could also organize some workshop there though I don't think it's a
good idea to spread LGM across too many places.

There are also many institutional places, like universities and also
city locations (there are some very cool places which already host
FLOSS events monthly and even FLOSS graphics events), and several of
them have actually much bigger spaces and theaters. So that's the
places we should target for LGM since the event used to have quite a
big audience. That's why I need to know approximately what has been
the size of this audience (in actual numbers because all I have right
now is my memories of "wow that's a lot of people") a few years back
so that I can try to restrain my search only to locations able to
sustain the same kind of audience.

Ok thanks for the names. Though I will go through my personal list of
venues first because that's already a list of many good places and I
know them. If all fail, I'll be glad to have contacts able to extend
my search.

I will need to have my questions answered first because I need numbers
and minimum details.
Thanks.

Jehan

P.S.: is there a reason why your message was private? I answer
privately as well because maybe you had a reason (maybe some people in
your list don't want their name in the open?). But if possible, I
would like each and every organization discussion in the open as
public ML discussions. That is also a topic we discussed during LGM
this year and for me a no-go. I want a completely open management.
Otherwise I won't take part of LGM as organizer (only as participant).
I will send a message in the list about this topic later tonight, as
well.
