Just a final followup.
I have just realized that LO Impress actually already supports a key sequence
as efficient as what I proposed: in current Impress (Version: 6.1.0.3) the
first single click selects the edit box as always, but then a second single
click, while appearing to do nothing, in fact selects the insertion point such
that simply typing text after the second single click will automatically select
edit mode and insert the text in the appropriate spot with no double click
required.

So I agree, this works for me as well.
