Aha!

Strictly speaking, I'm not _deleting_  selection, but _cutting_ it with Cmd-X.
My use-case involves moving the contents of a label from one position to
another, so it's usually a matter of a Cmd-X/Cmd-V pair, but sometimes I need
to delete the contents of a label without putting them back somewhere - for
example, if the original file has contents for each of the sixteen labels but
only the first two are needed for this job.
