Yes you are correct that thunderbird on linux and windows does open attachments
in read only mode. I normally save documents that i wish to edit to a
particular location, as the default open location from with a browser or email
client is always the temporary folder.
Well i guess Adolfo's suggestion of dynamic hiding would be the best thing
then. I personally have it icon hidden and if i open a read only document, the
icon doesnt appear, so i can turn it into edit mode, as there is also no menu
option for it.
