Like Stuart, I am not sure this request is very useful.

+ Afaik, Microsoft generally does not like the developer habit of using the
  start menu to link to web pages, uninstallers etc.

+ Windows 8 now has a Start screen that only supports one level of
  categories.

+ On Linux, Björn's comment 3 applies.

+ On OS X, there is no such thing as a menu, just a dock & an application
  folder.


Seems like a better idea to me to update http://qa.libreoffice.org/feedback
with links to the wiki and chat.
The libreoffice.org already contains plenty of news, so no need to link to
that, imho.
