Indeed, a toggle would not be a good idea... it would be too much effort to
maintain both ways to draw the cell outline.

We should mark this ticket as a duplicate of bug 161709, because the idea of
making this feature optional was also discussed there.

But in the end, let's simply remove the extra space.
