Feel free to reopen, it's your project too.

My NAB verdict is based on the fact that you can construct edge cases that
cannot be solved with the usual interaction/presentation methods. If a shape is
so small that handles cover it completely you may need to draw the image in a
larger scale or zoom in. The alternative of outer handles with some distance to
the object has its own drawbacks. And the benefit is quite limited given that a
handle is tiny and placed right now on the outer edge.

Why not? Whether you draw mm-sized objects on the default page or slightly
larger on a huge canvas - zoom will be your friend.
