There is a shorter way: select the entire range of your data, including the new
data, and drag it onto the chart. You do not need to put the diagram into edit
mode beforehand.

Nevertheless, it is useful Excel feature, that it shows the effected cells,
when you click the chart and you can change the range by dragging handles.
